Lumikoira Maitosuklaa at Lumenico - “Meeko”

The Bright Spirit

A Legacy continued

Meeko’s story feels like the second chapter of Lumenico, where we built on everything we had already learnt with and from Lupo.

Born on the 17th November 2016, Meeko is the son of our “Lupo” (Oberitz Trollnisse at Lumenico VW), a black tri male and “Lola” (Lumikoira Tähtisade), a brown tri bitch. This litter was affectionately known as the “Trikolori” litter, celebrating their tri-colour variety and also became known as the Chocolate Litter, which was reflected in their Kennel Club names:

  • “Ohra” (Lumikoira Valkosuklaa) – White Chocolate (cream bitch)
  • “Luti” (Lumikoira Tummasuklaa) – Dark Chocolate (black tri male)
  • “Meeko” (Lumikoira Maitosuklaa) – Milk Chocolate (brown tri male)

Before the litter was born, I had told his breeders Simon Brown & Louise Wyatt at Lumikoira that I hoped for a brown tri boy as our second Finnish Lapphund – and fittingly, a brown tri boy was what popped out last; our Meeko. So from that moment, we knew he would be coming home with us.

Having a dog sire a litter wasn’t something I’d ever imagined would happen.

Being involved in the experience from the very beginning gave me a new appreciation for breeding and puppy development. It was extraordinary. I was even lucky enough to be allowed to stay with the breeders with Lupo for several days once the puppies were older, witnessing their personalities begin to emerge. It remains one of the most special experiences of my journey with dogs.

It was the 14th January 2017 when we brought Meeko home. This time I didn’t bother with a carrier. He laid down next to me on the back seat and fell asleep without a care in the world.

Personality & Life at Home

Meeko was named after the mischievous raccoon from the Disney film Pocahontas. With his expressive Finnish Lapphund mask and eyebrow markings, he looked like a little bandit. It also echoed his father’s name, creating another link between them.

Most importantly, I had a feeling the name would suit his personality. That suspicion was very quickly confirmed as he settled himself into life with us.
Meeko is a true “brown clown” – a term affectionately used within the breed for the playful nature often seen in brown Finnish Lapphunds. He has been a free spirit from the day he was born. Cheeky, independent, endlessly entertaining, and completely lovable.

  • He has a talent for relaxing in the most improbable positions:
  • Curled around corners or walls
  • Chin balanced at impossible angles on metal bars
  • Sleeping upside down with legs in the air
  • Squeezing himself into the smallest dog bed available despite having larger options

While not naturally the cuddliest Lapphund, his affection feels all the more meaningful when he seeks out an ear scratch or belly rub.

Food is one of life’s greatest joys. At dinner time, kibble scattered across the grass sends him spinning in excited circles, crying with anticipation. He loves to lick the end of a jug of custard or a yoghurt pot clean. Much like his father, he also delights in rolling on icy grass during winter walks.

Lupo played an important role in shaping Meeko’s early manners and patience. Though energetic and mischievous as a puppy, those lessons set him up for life. Today, Meeko shows remarkable tolerance and gentleness with Yuna, happily indulging all her antics and rarely correcting her.

For three years Meeko also accompanied me to work at the Animal Health Trust, where he became a much-loved presence among colleagues and enjoyed spending time in the radiotherapy office with me, making friends wherever he went.

Showing Career

Meeko has never been one to enjoy sitting around waiting at shows. Much too boring for him. However, once he is inside the ring, he knows what to do.
He has developed into a confident and capable show dog in his own right and we’ve had some fun.

We took a break from showing following Lupo’s passing in 2023 and then whilst I focused on trying to get Yuna’s Junior Warrant.

However, Meeko and I returned to the ring in 2025 to have a go at competing in Open show veteran classes. I had hopes for him to follow in his fathers footsteps and gain a Veteran Warrant of his own. I’ve been so proud of how well he’s done in these classes so far.

At the time of writing (February 2026), Meeko has shown at 24 x Championship Shows, 53 x Open Shows, and 6 x Fun/Companion shows.

health

Meeko has been a healthy and robust dog to date.

Following minor molar cracking from chewing fallow antlers, dental X-rays confirmed removal was unnecessary. Two lower incisors were preventatively removed due to gum recession.

After Yuna joined the household, we reluctantly decided to have Meeko castrated to prevent any accidental matings and to reduce stress. With Kennel Club permission, he continues to be shown following both procedures.

Eye testing has also continued despite his neutering as I felt it was responsible breeding practice following his siring of a litter.

Progeny

Meeko has sired one litter and we were thrilled to learn that he has passed on his loveable and funny nature to his offspring. We are so grateful to still be in touch with the majority of the puppies sired by our boys and get such pleasure hearing all about their antics.

A Loveable Rogue

As Meeko matured beyond his whirlwind puppy phase (and his enthusiasm for chewing anything within reach) he grew into an extraordinary companion.

He is independent yet deeply connected, endlessly amusing, and completely secure in himself. Free from separation anxiety and full of quiet confidence, he brings laughter into our lives every single day.

He has become a wonderful role model for Yuna, guiding gently through example rather than correction, and remains a constant source of joy within our home.

We hope to share many more happy years together with this special boy – our lovable rogue, our brown clown, and an irreplaceable part of Lumenico’s story.
